An exchange with the National Party candidate (election in early October)

    My email:

    Blair,

Further to our conversation of Wednesday 2 August, I would appreciate National’s position on the following because I got no answer from Ms Boyak of Labour.

Given that the current government policy calls for limiting the global average temperature rise to 1.5 ℃, what is the starting point for the temperature and what is the ideal average global temperature? Logically, unless one knows the ideal temperature, it is impossible to know if limiting the temperature is a good thing. In addition, Ms Boyak was unable to answer my query as to the ideal concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. Has National made such a determination and if so, what is the ideal level of CO2.

    Respectfully
    Michael Stevenson

    His reply:

    Hi Michael,

I don’t have “a position” as to what is the ideal average global temperature should be or what the ideal concentration of CO2 is in the atmosphere. My position is that we have made a commitment to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions in NZ by 2050 and we need to fulfil that commitment.

    Best,
    Blair

*sigh* I have to learn to phrase my questions better.

      Such an inspiring political party…..

And now the second Auckland Harbour crossing raises its ugly head again. It must be election season! Labour – we will build tunnels … starting in 2029. National – we agree but will be more efficient. Greens – no we mustn’t; the earth is boiling and it’ll encourage the use of cars. ACT and Mayor Brown – there’s a better way.

I’ve lived in this country for 22 years and there was talk of a second crossing to eliminate the congestion then. I can’t see it happening in my lifetime unless it is handed to the private sector to plan and fund. (don’t mention tolls in NZ – it’s a dirty word)
