“Painful and worrying”?  But I thought which conference to attend, where to lunch, and the office pecking order were painful and worrying, already…pardon us if we don’t feel the required pangs  of sympathy. And the past two years have been a “painful and worrying time” for the poor bloody taxpayers who pay for the leeches.
