..Moral sentiment is the only restraint upon our appetites, the only counteragent to the plans our intellect can produce for taking what we wish from others who cannot resist. But in the record of history, only the cultures of the Christian Enlightenment and its moral predecessor, Judaic society, have insisted on the ineradicable inculcation of defensible moral sentiments in all the members of their nations.
The other peoples of the world are ruled wholly by their appetites, whether for wealth, for power, or for the subjugation or destruction of those not of their kind. One has only to look at them to see it. Yet it is from these that America now imports the majority of its new residents.
