Proposal to fine victims of graffiti
VICTIMS of graffiti could be slapped with $220 fines if they don’t clean up the mess vandals leave on their buildings.
In an effort to crack down on unwelcome street art, the council has proposed new bylaws that would fine owners or occupants of property who do not remove, block from public view or paint over graffiti,
Glenorchy Mayor Adriana Taylor said the bylaws would tackle an ongoing problem.
“Graffiti isn’t a major criminal problem but it does detract from the appearance and tidiness of the area,” she said.
“We are working on a comprehensive scheme to deal with graffiti in Glenorchy, and the bylaws are a vital part of that.”
“We won’t be handing out fines on the spot,” she said. “They will more likely be given out as a drastic measure for serious offences.”Ald Taylor said the new laws would reduce community complaints.
“We don’t have regular complaints but it’s good to have a structure in place to deal with them,” she said.
Well, of course…following this little Hitler’s “logic”, why not also have “structures in place” to deal with any and all possible complaints? I’m sure the arrogant bitch could dream up a whole lot of possibilities, all of which could be used to charge the victims rather than deal with the perpetrators.
The planned bylaws also include:
• New regulations to deal with open-air burning, which will prohibit burning of any waste in an incinerator without sufficient cause, with fines up to $2200.
The council–of course–gets to define what constitutes “sufficient cause”
• Improper caravan use, which will prohibit the use of caravans outside designated areas, with fines up to $2200.
