Oh, FFS!!

‘A section of Papamoa Beach has been cleared after a two-metre shark came within metres of people fishing on the shoreline.
…It came within 10 metres of the shore, where 20 people were fishing, police said.
The section of the beach has now been cleared and people have been urged to stay away from the area.’                NZ People’s Daily Herald
And everybody was tewibly fwitened! For crying out loud–a shark cruising just beyond the break is reason to clear the effing beach??? Since when? Most people who regularly fish beaches know that a shark cruising the shallows is often an indicator of fish in the area and they either take no notice of the bitey or they rig up a big bait and heavy trace to target it. When did it become police business? Are people now so fucking useless they can’t be trusted to deal with a perfectly ordinary example of nature doing what nature does?  (and I’d love to know when was the last time a shark left the water and came up on to the beach to grab somebody)

Most likely while the cops were clearing the beach, 5 houses in Papamoa were burglarised.

But shit, that’s just a private property thing.

Police priority is keeping the collective safe.

    For the greater good.

And you know what? I’m willing to bet that the sheep just shuffled off the beach on police orders and not one of them told a cop to eff off and mind his own business.

2m? Only a mere baby. Probably see a few more closures as Mummy and Daddy sharks run out of container contents ex-Rena. Probably has been a bumper festive season for the local shark population.

Anybody who has been around sharks much knows they’re not the Instant Ravening Beast Hollywood would have you believe. They can be frustratingly shy and easily spooked.
When we lived up in the north of NZ I used to fish out of Whangaroa harbour at dawn and out near the end of Stephenson’s island would often be followed by a good-sized Mako. After a dozen or so trips he took to occasionally swiping the berley (groundbait) bag hanging off the stern of the little wooden dinghy. Always the same shark and sometimes he’d snip a big snapper off the line if the fight dragged on for a while. I got to look forward to him being around that reef.
The next year some holidaying clowns in a big boat shot it with spearguns.
    Barbarians.

Only ones we really pay any attention to here are the Bulls, they can’t be trusted ,plus you never know if one is going to show or 50.Hammers are skiddish and Reefs and Makos couldn’t be bothered with anything so boring as a Human arm or leg.

The real thing to watch for here,Barracuda, they will take a test bite on nearly anything, fast and damn smart too,you can look a big one in the eye and tell they are thinking.

      • KG says:

Great skip bait, properly rigged. A barracuda trolled at around twelve knots is a fine marlin and mako bait.

        • Darin says:

Check this out,Barracuda helping his self to a King and at the very end a Bottlenose Dolphin finishes off the King, quite a surprise

A Cuda the size of that one nipped my buddy’s girlfriend on a scuba dive in the Gulf. They were diving on a rig when some Jacks came up followed by several huge Cudas(6’+) she was watching the big ones and didn’t see the little one dart in on her from behind.Little bastard caught the back of her ankle, went trough the strap on her fin and clipped her Achilles tendon

She’s fine now,but needless to say she’s a bit turned off on anymore bluewater diving.

  7. Cadwallader says:

Isn’t this the beach the greenies claimed would be forever polluted by the Rena? Obviously the greenies were wrong…again!

  8. KG says:

The guy who made the clip describes this as a “monster Tiger shark”, which it isn’t. But a lot of fun anyway.

Just the other side of the main-beach there, right of the tombolo/spit/rocks, was called Shark Alley by everybody (locals and mainlanders).
Because everybody had either seen sharks or had a surfy mate or cousin or neighbour who was out amongst them.
(Papamoa beach is same stretch a few kms down)

    Two metres

Someone has watched jaws once too often!

  11. KG says:

Yep. There’s a jetty up on Darnley Island in Torres Strait that’s just two planks wide and the tide washes over it ankle-deep when high. Huge tiger sharks swim around it all the time….and local kids jump off it. Maybe they need to go fish off that to give ’em a sense of perspective….

  12. Flashman says:

Does Mr Plod have any real authority or right to issue orders in such self-evidently benign situations?

In my opinion his was a grossly hysterical over-reaction to a non-existent risk.

    • KG says:

Yes, it was and I’m damn sure I wouldn’t meekly shuffle off. If the cops had been forced to arrest a few people for refusing, it would highlight the idiocy of it all. But once again, the sheep give away their liberty and by so doing, they erode it a little more for all of us.
