“healthy eater” sees the light:

‘..Damn your low fat diet: How a reformed vegan gorges on all the foods his granny enjoyed… and has never felt better
‘According to government advice, I was doing everything right — and yet my health had never been worse. My weight had crept up over the years, until in 2008 I was 14½ stone — which is a lot of blubber for someone who is 5ft 10in — and was classified as clinically obese.
…But that was about to change. In 2010, I decided to give up my supposedly healthy lifestyle and embrace good old-fashioned meat.
From that day on, I ate red meat four or five days a week. I gobbled the fat on chops, chicken skin and pork crackling. I feasted on everything we’re told to avoid. The effects were instant….’

I always laugh at all these recommendations as what to eat. I’d put on a lot of weight if I had to eat them all – 5 veg, omega 3, fruit, salad, etc. The only one I go along with is the red wine – for cardio-protection of course.

On a serious note; a good mixed diet of fresh produce eaten in moderation is all one needs – think 1000’s of years as a hunter/gatherer that shaped our evolution – grains, nuts, fruit, green leaves, meat, alcohol (yes it has been our diet for millenia). No vitamins, no supplements.

  2. KG says:

Of course. Commonsense rules, as usual. But there are few careers in and no funding for commonsense.
Good to know you’re cardio-protected.

That guy sounds a bit of a nutter but he is right about a few things. A while back I started getting heavy, didn’t like it and did a lot of research. In particular I wondered why it was that statistically Western societies eat less fat overall, as recommended by “authorities,” yet we are getting fatter and fatter.
To cut to the chase, I dropped all refined carbs, minimised carby veges and ate plenty of meat, fat, cheese, eggs, salami etc. and lots of green veges. The weight fell off very quickly without hunger as food is not restricted. As long as I avoid spuds, pasta, bread and sugary things, the weight stays off. I don’t jog or go to gyms. (shudder) The Doc tells me all is good; well goodish considering my nasty habits. ;-) Anyway, I KNOW now that dietary fat is not the enemy; it’s high carbs. It really is time for more honesty in Govt. propaganda. Yeah right!

ps. Beer and wine are limited on this diet but all gin or malt whisky, on the rocks or plain, is most beneficial to the system and indeed, highly recommended.

  5. KG says:

He does sound like a bit of a loon, Mara but he’s definitely on to something. I read recently that some of the diet advice for diabetics has been shown to be wrong, too.
I don’t trust anything the government or any of the myriad taxpayer-funded do-gooder organisations such as the Heart Foundation say.
Half the time they’re peddling opinion or shonky science as facts.

  6. KG says:

Oh no! Life without beer and wine would be unthinkable.
I have to admit that my problem is how to put weight on, being utterly uninterested in food.

I’m on the Elbow diet,I find it works best if I bend my arm at the Elbow and eat what ever I want  Of course it helps that I’m not a desk sitter and put in 8-10 hours of actual work everyday.

There was some liberal twit on the tube the other day complaining that our kids are too fat here.It has to be the food doing it we need to have a program like Moochelle’s……..I kinda quit paying attention then, but this more sensible person jumped in and said “we need to reinstate PE programs in the school systems for grammar students so they learn to stay active early on”

Then the twit starts yapping again”we have already tried that in this country and what we found is boys and girls tend to separate into gender groups and behave differently” No shit?

“Girls tend to be less aggressive and play non-contact games such as jump rope while boys tend to be more aggressive and play contact games such as dodge ball”
    No shit?Really?Nah,couldn’t be?

Then the (obvious conservative) spoke up again and said “so what we have then now is that both genders have too much built up energy and both put on extra weight. And since both are in close proximity the boys tend to be less aggressive while the girls tend to be more so.And you don’t think that maybe this idiotic experiment is the real culprit why our children are obese and misbehaved?”

Twit’s response was cutoff by the crowds applause at that point which they should have been.

Welcome to the party. Refined carbs and sugar are deadly.

OK so I’ve kept the weight off for years eating meats, veggies, nuts but the Scotch is becoming tougher to get down without felling like cow pie. Maybe I should add water but what is the point then?

    Such dilemmas.

I must say im a health and fitness nut, I workout 6 days a week and eat very healthy foods.

My work is often undone by the beer and wine diet

  11. mara says:

There is uncontroversial scientific PROOF that men who are uninterested in food are also low in libido! Gee, you fell right into that one KG.

    • KG says:

 Gawd! Are there any more proofs that men have small..err..equipment and don’t care for sex, Mara? Let me know now so I can be more careful about what I post..

  12. kowtow says:

The key to the story above is ” I decided……”.

When fat bastards DECIDE to do something about their own condition, then they can get things done, same for just about everything in life, personal responsibility and common sense.

  13. mara says:

Alright KG, no more PROOFS. I was running out of them anyway.
Kowtow, I agree with the personal responsibility and common sense stance but it doesn’t help people trying to do the right thing when you see the crap on the front page of the Herald today, purporting to be common sense on healthy vs non healthy foods, especially from a weight loss point of view. It’s plain wrong in many respects. Like you KG, I also have reservations about some of the diabetic advice. My old chap has been managing this for years. Luckily we have good medics in the family, and, as a retired RN, I know enough to know where to look for the facts, and not rely on “health propaganda.”

  14. KG says:

Rats…I quite admire the creativity of your proofs, Mara.
What I want to know is–if I can eat very little, and often garbage at that, subsist on black coffee and cigarettes and tons of sugar…how come I have almost no health problems?
    Diet ain’t everything.

  15. mara says:

Good question KG. I once flatted with a woman like this. I hated the cow! That was a while ago and you’re a bloke so I won’t hold it against you. ;-)

  16. KG says:

Darin, that’s cousin Caspar. We don’t talk much about him. Not least because he had rotten taste in beer.
