‘FOR $1, you can buy a slice of sunburnt country in outback Queensland. Richmond, population 827, in the state’s northwest, has put up four 800sq m town blocks in a “buck for a block” ballot.
“It is not a gimmick,” said the mayor.
“Out here our motto is: Live and let live.”
Nice people, good hunting, almost no traffic..
How much is one Australian dollar to the American dollar
100,ooo USD
I know the American buck has been falling of late in the money markets…
It’s still about 1:1.
They know how to get stuff done out here, Ronbo. The guy pictured in the news item was sitting on our couch the other day and Gecko told him about bloody freezer trucks which park outside all night, leaving the freezer units running.
Problem now fixed.
And that’s their attitude to getting things done. No fuss, no big dramas, no citified bullshit. They run the town pretty much the way they run cattle properties, with hard headed common sense and a sense of humour and comradeship.
@KG:
I’ve always said the best government is in the small towns.
When I was a kid, we moved from Huntington, West Virginia (pop. 250,000) just across the Ohio River and the state line to a small town named Proctorville, mainly because my dad was fed up with the high property taxes and no service city administration, that couldn’t even fill the pot holes in the street outside our home, which especially pissed off dad
Proctorville, Ohio (pop 1,000) – in contrast, provided excellent service and had great public schools, all on a tiny budget in comparison to its big neighbor across the river.
Yes, the pot holes were all taken care of quickly and without my dad going off on the road department supervisor.
Dad was a happy camper – and if dad was happy, the family was happy.
Small towns are the answer because the councils in those places are directly accountable to the ratepayers, Ronbo.
Not protected by layers of bureaucracy and “proper procedures” and lying ratbastard PR men and PC horsecrap.
The people making the decisions are likely to be standing next to you at the bar or filling the ute with diesel at the pumps. Lots of opportunities for “direct feedback”.
If it wasn’t for those crazy gun laws I’d be there myself despite the hot weather which I detest.
I value my ability to knock off for Lunch, walk down to the bank, draw out some cash, stroll two blocks down to the gun store, fill out a 4473,pay the man and walk out with a new gun and still have time to stop and grab a Hamburger before my lunch hour is up.
What I really enjoy is the freedom to talk over some work a budd needs done on his select fire Uzi,in broad daylight, infront of the same bank and nobody even bats an eye(true story)
I agree about the gun laws–they’re the only drawback here. And there’s certainly no organized movement to liberalize them.
As for the weather…today it’s only 20c and with a fine drizzle–which I detest.
Even feral cat is curled up on the couch under the heater outlet.
Heh-“Feral” cat
@Ronbo – “I’ve always said the best government is in the small towns..”
Very true.
Ah yes but how far do you need to travel to the nearest shop to get essentials like milk, cream, smokes and gin? Exactly, too bloody far.
Things might start looking up Mara as soon as KG gets him a town block and opens “KG’S TOBACCO BULLETS AND BEER EMPORIUM”
