Francis Porretto has an interesting (and I fear true) take on this.

      Perhaps, Oswald. But at that level, nearly every pole-climber has an awful lot to lose and is bound to have a few skeletons in the closet too.
      And who knows what pressure can be brought to bear on them by an utterly unscrupulous administration?

        Usually the threat of the loss of their pension – ‘toe the line or get discharged without your pension’.

          Hitler did the same thing in late 1930s, as did Stalin, although in Hitler case the German military tired to assassinate him several times after the appointment of lackey generals, the last and almost successful attempt was on July 20, 1944.

          I hope the U.S. military follows the German model, and you know there are thousands of potential plotters against El Presidente in the officer ranks.

    Obama is purging all from the military who will not give the order to fire on American citizens. It is not the order I fear, but whether the rank and file soldier, sailor, airman and marine will fire upon American civilians. If they follow that order, we are lost.

      Not lost, but damn, it’d drag out the whole affair and make it a lot messier.

      Not even the armed forces can pacify the U.S. if things get physical. If a handful of goat-herds in the mountains of Afghanistan can sling mud in the eyes of the Allies for ten damn years then there’s no way a halfhearted U.S. military will stomp down the patriot spirit.

      Furthermore the U.S. military will have no “safe home” to go back to if they start turning their guns inward. It would be a recipe for mass desertion and generally shit outcomes.

        In a sense, I agree with the “we are lost” comment though. Civil society will be broken and stay broken for a very, very long time afterwards.

        Once again great minds think alike – many soldiers, especially blacks, will obey whatever order El Presidente gives them, including opening fire on their own citizens, as their blind loyalty is either to their paychecks, ideology, or following a Fearless Leader to the Gates of Hell.

        However, many troops will simply throw down their arms and go home, others will refuse to open fire on their own countrymen and be kicked out of the Service, and many will defect with weapons to the Tea Party.

        The is what happened in the U.S. Civil War. The better officers and NCOs went rebel with service weapons. The losers stayed on active duty and lost battle after battle for the next two years. The neutrals went west to California.

      It is the older guys that keep the military running. A fact that is lost on Obama and his ilk. If they staff the military with illegals, the population will turn on them faster than you can say Jackie Robinson.

      Lincoln won his civil war.

      I don’t think the same will be true of Obama if a rebellion breaks out.
