‘QUEENSLAND’S chief magistrate has put himself in charge of all disputed bail applications made by accused bikies.
Chief Magistrate Tim Carmody has issued an edict that will effectively ensure he makes all the decisions in disputed cases, The Courier-Mail reports.
The Queensland government and the judiciary have been warring over a number of bikie cases, after parliament passed new laws with a presumption against bail for members of criminal gangs.
It also aims to cut costs for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and ensure “security for all”….’ said Mr Mugabe. (bolded words added by me.)
The “bikie laws” are a step too far and this is another step beyond those laws. Instead of a widespread revolt against them by magistrates, the government now has a single poodle who can be pressured into denying natural justice to any poor bastard hauled before the courts under these laws. Police are already harassing law-abiding recreational motorcycle riders, and in one case they even insisted a woman riding a motorcycle bare her arms in order to show she had no “gang tattoos”.
The foundation of a law-abiding society is trust and consensus. Both will be eroded by this.
Same here, they have gotten so incompitent at dealing with real criminals after a crime has been commited that now they figure to just go after and harass everybody.
I would rarely find the time of day for a Civil Liberties advocate, but these are strange times, and we must make strange alliances. In this case there is clearly a motive behind the action, and my guess is that the motive is to “cow” the population step by step. “First they came …” etc.

Looking at the traffic in that vid makes me wonder of GR recently took up Surfing
You know I was thinking,if there really are any hardcore bikers in the group this judge is dealing with, the problem may just take care of it’s self.
I heard someone from up there in Queensland speaking of this problem on the radio the other day, apparently they have some real trouble with curtailing these bikie gangs and it’s largely out of control, shootings in shopping malls, intimidation, thuggery etc. The law-abiding up there have simply had a gutful of it.
So i have some sympathy for their plight and their willingness to do whatever it takes to to get rid of these bastards. Still i don’t think they’re fully aware of the consequences of these actions, in a way i suppose its the natural direction this sort of thing has to take.
When you insist that you have no right to bear arms and take out the shit yourselves, you inevitably have to hand over your rights to everything else as well to those you deem more capable of keeping you in line.
Fair points, Mathew, but people are too ready to give away civil liberties in the name of “security”.
There was no problem with the bikies that spending more money on intensive policing wouldn’t have fixed. The problem is that it’s all too easy to pass laws which impact also on innocent people, and that’s how we all get ruled by the lowest common denominator.
