Many thanks to Gantt for the post and to all of you for the comments. All I could think while I was away was “the bastard’s finally dead and I’m nowhere near computer to help celebrate it!”
A hard 1400km round trip. We’ve seen almost no rain for over a year and then we get cut off by rising rivers in the Gulf country. sleep. beer. shower.

Puke City today in the USA – The Lamestream Media is saying crap like, “Mandela paved the way for Obama :!::???: BITE ME, LAMMERS :!:

On the upside, the patriot media is ripping Obama a new butt hole on this issue and his Obamacare.

Welcome back KG. I’ve driven over 2000 km in the last week so I can sympathize.

It’s interesting that only America of the English speaking nations is still loyal to Ye Olde English measurements like miles, yards and inches :!:

You’d think as being the only rebel nation in the British Empire we would have been the first to convert to the more logical metric system :!:

However, I’ll bet a pint [of beer] is still a pint in Washington, D.C., London, Auckland, or Brisbane :!:

Well, the tourists often do, Robert. ;-)
(and the young European backpackers are notorious for not dipping the lights for oncoming traffic, running out of fuel and rolling their rented vans)
Usually a 1400km round trip wouldn’t be very hard work, but the tropical storms, river crossings and numerous road trains (try meeting one of those on a narrow strip of road bordered by deep mud at a closing speed of over 200km/hr) made it into a hard slog. The ‘roos and cattle wandering unfenced roads make it interesting, too….
      Amazing birdlife, though.

        (a) not dipping the lights. I’d be very upset if they started wearing bras, KG, especially in the cool weather.
        (b) running out of fuel. Only when the young blokes (or silly old blokes) run out of money to buy them drinks.
        (c) rolling their rented vans. I think you missed some words. I think you meant to say “…rolling around in their rented vans.

Welcome back, BTW. Glad of safe travels for you and Gecko.

The metric system, don’t get me started. There’s so much metric stuff that isn’t metric, just relabled imperial

Metric sockets still with 1/4 3/8 and 1/2″ drives.

Metric pipe threads that are really BSP.

Metric roller chain also British Standard imperial.

AND Most importantly I can get 64 16 oz bottles of Beer in my cooler as opposed to *only* 24 I liter bottles. And I have more handy things to shoot at when done drinking.

Thar! Take that ya primative members of the Froggy yard stick cult!http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_mail.gif

Bloody imperial system….http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_sad.gif Fluid bloody ounces and drams and dividing 7/16″ by 3/64″…
Not to mention rods and perches and other throwbacks to Neanderthals.

    • Darin says:

I don’t care what the system is I deal with them all almost daily.Fractions, their decimal form, kilo, centi and millimeters, drill sizes, tap drill sizes, bolt sizes, ground thread limits of taps and dies, reamer allowances for the various metals,of course Trig, pipe threads inch and metric, speeds and feed rates for the various alloys and tools, heat treating and tempering data, electrical formulas on and on day in day out and all from memory and experience.Plus I know where nearly every nut, bolt, drill and weld rod in the company is located, how many we have left, when we need to reorder and which vendor has the best price and delivery on whathttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_cool.gif

Ya,I’m totally messed up in the headhttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gif

Fathoms, cables, chains, Whitworth, British standard fine…….. I like metric, it’s simple and standardised. Converted in the early 60’s and haven’t looked back (except for the set of spanners I needed for my MGB roadster)….and now in NZ it is much confusion.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_negative.gif

      • Ronbo says:

The U.S. military is metric. I guess that’s because of NATO and having so many troops stationed in Germany during the Cold War – at one time there were 35o,000 troops PLUS dependents stationed in the Federal Republic.

Of course, the German traffic cops loved American drivers in their big USA cars with their big green American style plates, because the speedometer was in miles per hour, “But officer I was going the speed limit of 35 :!:
