‘Marxism Mutates’

‘…For today, I want refer to “movements” for the “rights of the indigenous.” Having served and visited extensively in Central and South American countries with large “indigenous” populations, I can freely state that the region’s “indigenous” cultures largely ceased to exist hundreds of years ago thanks largely to European brutality and diseases. “Indigenous” culture today means rural poverty. Calling to protect “indigenous culture” really means seeking to preserve rural poverty; to keep people poor, sick, illiterate, and isolated from the great and small wonders of our age. It means helping condemn them to half lives consumed with superstition, disease, and of watching their puny children struggle to live past the age of five. It’s a call to keep certain people as either an ethnic curio on the shelf for the enjoyment of European and North American anthropologists or, equally vile, as exploitable pawns for the use of political activists..’

The linked article reminds me of something I read abut fifteen years ago, about tribes of tree dwellers in the jungles of South America. They are cannibals and they live in tree houses, and each night they have to pull up their ladders so the neighbouring tribes can’t climb up and kill them and eat them. I was both surprised and appalled to learn that there were still cannibals living in the 20th century, but what surprised me even more was that the writer was expressing concern that this link with history was in danger because of modern development encroaching on their territory, and we should be taking steps to preserve their culture before it dies out and is lost. I thought to myself that if anything we should encourage a culture of cannibalism to die out, and who really cares if it does? I’m sure that people could go and try to teach them not to eat each other, but if they insist on living that way, then what? What would be lost if tribes of cannibals die out?

But..but they’re natural and everything, Phil. And who are we to arrogantly save them from that life by imposing our white European heteronormative values on them?

Even in Brave New World, the totalitarian government allowed the savages to live their own barbarian lives on Reservations…
