Snow

snow Horrible stuff.
So far – apart from some minor glitches – things seem to be going ok. But the cold is taking some adjusting to.

Is that the view of the back 40 off the rear porch of the Manor house?http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_mail.gif

Hmmm….cold, wish I were there.I spent the afternoon mowing the grass,96F humidity near 80%,sweat filling my boots again I hate summer

    • KG says:

Just from the highway, Darin. And that’s as close as I want to get, believe me. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_sad.gif
We love summer. There’s almost no such thing as too hot.

      • Cadwallader says:

Where the hell are you? (Wairarapa?) There’s far more snow further south! A good dose of winter chill clears the mind and focuses the brain on how to get somewhere warmer fast!

        • KG says:

          Dannevirke, Cad.
Electrons slow down at close absolute zero, and my brain does the same. (not that it’s ever agile at the best of times).
Anyway, we’re finding it interesting, exploring new territory and looking for a house. What strikes me anew, though, is just how small the farms are and how fenced in everything is.

          • pmofnz says:

What area are you after? If it’s a 10acre lifestyle block and house in Dannevegas area, I have something that might interest you.

And yes it was bloody cold at <2 degrees this morning.

          • Cadwallader says:

Dannevirke is far enough from the coast for you not to have to worry about boat people floating into your property. (Bloody cold hole from June to August though.) On the bright side there’s been a bit of oil prospecting in the region, you might strike just what you need.

PS If you want some gratuitous advice on land conveyancing you are welcome to e-mail me…yes I still have what sometimes passes for compassion! Just confirm you’re not a Muslim.

  2. Michael in Nelson says:

From that distance KG it could be banana pollen and you would feel cold.

    • KG says:

You’re right, Michael. Believe me, the wind off that stuff is cold enough. And the Benz chose this morning for the heater blower to stop working. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gifFixed now, though.

  3. Oswald Bastable says:

Sitting down at the waterfront yesterday thinking it was a little chilly with the sun behind a cloud, then realized I’m wearing shorts and a t-shirt in mid august…

“Dannevirke (Danish: “Danish creation” or “Danes’ work”), is a rural service town in the Manawatu-Wanganui Region of the North Island, New Zealand. It is the major town of the administrative Tararua District, the easternmost of the districts in which the Regional Council has responsibilities. The surrounding area has developed into dairy, beef cattle and sheep farming, which now provides the major income for the town’s population of 6,000.” -Wikipedia

For a second looking at the picture I thought you’d landed in Washington state.

The cold is no problem. Dress in layers. Also, snow is nice play around in…Do snow angels :!:

Yeah, it’s not a bad little place, Ronbo.
As I mentioned below one of my brothers used to live there.

I spent five of my years as a light infantry officer in Korea. Winter was the primary time for field training over there, since the paddies were all gone dry and fallow. There were two patterns of winter weather. It was either clear sky with a wicked wind coming out of Siberia, in which case the temps were usually around -18 celsius or a bit colder. The worst was humping the mountains in the Cheorwon Valley for a week when the temps hit -51 celsius. It was brutal. But then the other weather pattern . . . . clouds rolled in, the winds died, the temperature warmed up to about -6 celsius and the snow would fall. It was like nirvana. I used to pray for snow every day during the winters there. I have loved snow ever since.

    • Ronbo says:

      Were you in Germany :?:

If you’re a snow lover, there’s nothing Bavaria in the winter, a real winter wonderland with beautiful rolling hills covered in snow and cute Hansel & Grethel villages in the valleys.

Of course, The American army trained in winter and one fine January in the 1970s my Military Intelligence unit was sent to support the 2nd Armored Division (Patton’s old “Hell on Wheels” outfit that was always sent in first to break the German lines)…

Anyhow, we were driving along this freshly snow plowed back road looking for the tanks when we noticed a large number of infantrymen with long poles that they were pushing into the snow. This made us curious, so we stopped and asked a First Sergeant what the deal was…

He said, “We are looking for a platoon of M-60 main battle tanks…The last report was that they were out in that field someplace. You see it snowed last night pretty heavy, zero visibility, so the tankers went down to the village Inn to warm up after they parked the tanks in this here field. When they got up this morning they couldn’t find them, so they asked the infantry to help them out.”http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif

  8. John H says:

    Hey KG!
Forgive my (rather thick) ignornace…….are you back in NZ? Looks like it!
Both my wife’s parents died last year and we are looking at possibly moving back to NZ by Easter 2015! All our kids are still there……enough said.
Just bought a Sako 6mm ppc varmint from an old pal in NZ – it’s an accuracy machine!
I’d love to come and play with you….

Dannevirke! One of my brothers used to live there. Good photo of the snow-covered mountains there…. :)

Anyway, I have kind of a “badge of honour” to sport this morning. I’ve been banned from the WhaleOil blog (blowed if I know why but I don’t care).
They’re banning people there for being “too chatty”….. I kid you not. Go figure.
Anyway – it’ll be good to hang around a REAL blog (here) for a change…..
