I have no wish to provoke a Catholic-bashing comments thread and would appreciate it if people would refrain. ( I am not a Catholic, by the way) But this Pope would do better to speak up forcefully in defence of the Christians being slaughtered all over the Arab and African worlds by the very people he is trying to appease.

I believe the man is a disaster for the Church.

    Protestant denominations going politically left to seem “with it” with the young have essentially killed several of them in the US. I expect mainstreaming liberation theology will bring the same effect to the Catholics as well.

    Traditional Catholics like Ann Barnhardt have far harsher words for this Pope than non-Catholics, I suspect.
    Puts me in mind of the old Dave Allen skit. A drunken guy in the pub’s been whacked for repeating “the Pope’s a bum, the Pope’s a bum.”

    A buddy told me the other day he had came up with a new way to kill Fire ants.

    He said all you do is kick the hill over,wait until the ants come pouring out and then spray paint them black.

    Within hours half the ants will quit working and starve to death.

    The current Pope seems to be a leftie hence for that reason alone his dogma is suspect. I am not a Catholic but my experience is that Catholics are generally up for a few jokes even at their own expense. Not so with the dour Presbyterians.

    I am told by hunters that there is an old drovers track across the Ruahines from Pohangina Valley to the back of Dannevirke. I have a good idea where the Pohangina Valley end is but wonder whether you know where the eastern end is?

          Apparently there’s a lot of deer just a couple of k up the road from where we live. But I don’t particularly like venison so there’s no reason to shoot one.
          A pig would be a different matter, though…. :twisted:

            In the past 12 months I have met two unrelated hunters who have been to the Chatham Islands hunting pigs. Apparently hunting pigs there is relatively easy due to the numbers of pigs and the flat terrain. The Chathams have started to embrace this type of tourism with several accommodation options now available. Good luck to the locals for promoting this. Plenty of beer at the pub too! :grin:

                Crays make great snapper bait, Cad. When we lived ‘way up north in NZ a long time ago I used to crush crays up for groundbait and use whole tails as bait.
                Very effective, it was.

    As a {lapsed} Catholic, I vaguely remember John XXIII, better remember Paul VI, John Paul the First, JP Squared, Benedict and now Francis – something just occurred to me, reading the comments – America elected her first Socialist President in 2008 – is it possible the College of Cardinals decided to follow America’s lead ?

    {Hopefully !} Needless to say, I disagree with Francis more than any other Pontiff whose rule I’ve lived under – he’s wa-a-a-a-a-ay too liberal with other peoples’ money – with all the wealth the Vatican controls, HE could be making a difference, rather than pontificating at the rest of us.

      I’ve admired a number of them for their intellect, but Francis, I think, is simply a socialist. And I find nothing to admire in that.
      It also seemed a little odd and suspicious to me that he was elected so quickly.

      That’s interesting but is it possible that Francis’ inability to understand not to spend other people’s money comes from his being Argentinian? This is the country which has at times endured 72% inflation and defaulted on its loans.
