‘Maori caught driving without a licence in south Auckland are being offered support instead of a $400 fine.
..The leaked documents said Maori drivers caught at the wheel without a licence or in breach of their conditions were to be referred for training and not given a ticket.
Counties Manukau police “guidelines” leaked to TVNZ have revealed the policy, which police said they have been enforcing since last year.
Police said the policy was aimed at reducing Maori offending…’
So…I would have to pay a $400 fine if caught driving without a licence, because I’m white.
Racist, much?
UPDATE:
‘Race-based police policy to be changed
The Police Commissioner has assured the Government that there was no intention by police to run a raced-based policy over ticketing of unlicensed drivers.’
Of course not. And this has nothing to do with public outrage either….

    Let’s just make all crimes into non-crimes for Maori. It is a sure way to empty our prisons and it’ll save the tax payer a fortune.

    silly talkback host on ZBtalkback last night had this up for discussion; and guess what, she was on the side of the police and kept quoting the treaty of Waitangi as her reasoning. Someone gave her a real earful of how crazy she was being, but of course, having the upper hand she just cut him short and laughed him off. Most respondents didn’t agree with her though. Talk about complete and utter racism!!

        Actually Jamie, there’s no such thing as “Maori”. The Treaty is a contract between The Crown and the Chiefs of the various tribes. They were not “one people” until they signed The Treaty. Prior to that they were busy trying to wipe each other out.

    The sector of society that is the most over represented in the crime statistics is given a free pass to drive without a driver’s license by the NZ Police. I wonder what the Police would think if one of these unlicensed drivers they’d let go drove through a red light and killed or seriously injured a Police officer’s family. They’ll be extending the experiment to burglary next no doubt

      Hi DMR.

      Perhaps if “…The sector of society that is the most over represented in the crime statistics…” weren’t so prone to violence, thuggery, lawlessness and more prone to thrift, sobriety and productive living, they’d be less “…over represented in the crime statistics.”

      But there I go, being all racist again.

            But seriously, we pale faces may be on to something good here! We simply declare ourselves Maori, African, Asian, American Indian…whatever…and how can “The Man” say we aren’t?

            I mean this week the oppressed white race of Planet Earth has been given an “escape clause” since it has been deemed Officially Politically Correct in the USA to self identify as being any sex, race, creed, color, or religion!

              Last bid guidelines chart I saw was
              female 10%
              native american 12%
              veteran 10%
