     When I was in the Philippines in the U.S. Army back in the late 1960s and stationed at Clark AFB, we bored troopers after a few beers on a hot weekend used to take our unit’s unarmored tracked personnel carrier out to the Bam-Bam River and swim across to the other side.

     Also, 2 1/2 ton four wheel drive weapons’ carrier would do the job as well, although it was a bit uncomfortable when the river came flowing into the cab, as the deuce-and-a-halfs did not swim.

     The joy rides ended when one of our drivers and his 3/4 ton weapons carrier on an unauthorized Saturday trip across the Bam-Bam was suddenly swept downstream when an unexpected downpour upstream caused the river to rise and become a real hazard.

     The military found the remains of the truck, but the driver is still missing.

   What those guys in the Hilux are doing is absolutely routine in some places.
   And I’ve had a Hilux stuck in a creek in a remote area and watched as a bunch of drunk blackfellas from where we lived ploughed past in a petrol Falcon station wagon. Loaded with cases of beer.
   It took a while to live that one down.

   I saw a CBS news report today that Marine Corp. tested male vs female efficiency in “battle” assessment and the males did better. No surprise. These fools in the ute were males. No surprise. Conclusion; men are stronger than women but women are not so stupid.

     “Women are not so stupid”? Is that why women put men on the moon? Designed, built and sent a probe beyond the bounds of our solar system? Wrote Ode to Joy and Beethoven’s Ninth? Invented the scanning electron microscope?………and on and on and on.
     Almost every modern convenience used, enjoyed and exploited by women, they owe to “stupid” men.
     Do youths do stupid things? Yes. But the same inherited biological processes- the urge for risk-taking, the insatiable curiosity – which produce that behaviour also produce the massive achievements of the male sex.

       Many things men do seem stupid to women because they appear to be unnecessary at the time they’re done.

       Needless to say, if I lived on the other side of that river and crossing it was the shortest distance between my family and an emergency room, I’d damn well be “stupid” enough to figure out whether my vehicle could cross it before anything terrible happened to any of us.

       Women are the first to scream bloody murder when the man of the house has failed to plan a contingency for whatever emergency arises, but they’re typically the anchor when the man chucks a fifty dollar first aid kit and hundred dollar snatch strap in the trolley at supercheap auto.
