      We just celebrated 10 years after Katrina here and parts of New Orleans are still messed up.It’s called the Jack-o-lantern effect,odds and ends of active homes and businesses interlaced with vacant lots and dilapidated buildings.

      As a taxpayer I do not mind helping people rebuild after a disaster,heck I might need the same myself one day,but to see the way the money was stolen through corruption and cronyism is infuriating.

      The money granted to the state and city was eaten up primarily by the numerous consultants and advisers the city and state hired.Green this and sustainable that,what a bunch of nonsense.Then the bureaucracy slow walked all the permits and allowed all manner of disputes to derail any progress being made.The people living in much of the 9th ward were old,retired or still working and barely getting by before the storm.I have no problem helping those people out,but money,my money was allocated to make those people whole again and it was wasted on nonsense instead.

      At the end of the day private money got more accomplished,Brad Pitt and a couple more Hollywood types for whatever else they are did write a bunch of checks to make it happen as did many other civic and Church based groups.Looks like the same story all over again in NZ.
