      I remember being at Ft. Devens, Massachusetts at the Post theater and the national anthem was played with the flag on the screen and all military personnel were required to stand.

      I noticed two WACs (Women Army Corps) remained seated. I got the manager and we marched the two young ladies to his office, where I got their I.D. cards and wrote down their names and units. the blonde one asked innocently, “What’s this all about sergeant?” I said, “You two did not stand for national anthem, so I’m going to report you to the base CSM and he’ll get back to the two of you, I’m sure.”

      The manager asked them why they didn’t stand up as required….The blonde replied, “We don’t believe in that flag shit.” I lost my temper and yelled, “THEN WHY THE FUCK DID YOU JOIN THE ARMY?”

      Anyhow, our two complaints were quickly forwarded to the Command Sergeant Major of Ft. Devens at that time, a Korean war veteran by the name of Constantine who – according the clerks present – hauled the two young ladies into his office – and – unfortunately for them – repeated they were not into that “flag shit”

      Long story short – before the day was done they both were on a bus to Boston, having been kicked out of the U.S. Army with bad paper discharges and no veteran rights.

    What a surprise – that it has been printed in the Herald.

    This paper looks at immediate outcome only, which is the tip of the iceberg, and not at the long term outcomes such as behavioural problems and poor performance at school. Not surprisingly the midwife model of vaginal birth at all costs …..is shown up for the life time cost to those children affected. And not surprisingly the College of Midwives and the Ministry advisor (Hulun’s close mates) are trying to find excuses. What is not included is that the predicted and/or recognised “at risk” babies for these sort of events are delivered by doctors which skews the medical model toward adverse outcomes…and yet they do far better than the midwife outcomes.

    mawm, I saw this coming decades ago so that when I was expecting our child we shelled out for a good obs. specialist. No way any hairy- ankled madwife with crystals and whale music was coming anywhere near me. Best money we ever spent. PC really does kill and damage babies. Mainly thanks to Comrade Helen Clarke who is determinedly childless.

      There can be no doubt that you made the right choice for your child. What women forget in making their choices is that they may have more chances but the child has only one.

      Another fact that is never discussed is that if a woman is going to have no more than 2 children a caesarean section is the safest choice.

          Everybody gets free maternity care – midwife led and with medical oversight if necessary (if there are any medical issues – and that is where the problem is; in recognition thereof), unless you want to pay for it and then you can choose a Dr or an independent midwife who has a vested interest (ie. loses out on some money) in ensuring a vaginal birth.

          As far as our socialised medicine is concerned – it is free and good but you have waiting lists and criteria to meet before being put on the list. On the other hand you can get private medical insurance and private healthcare with no waiting lists, doctor of your choice, etc. but then you are paying twice – with your taxes and your insurance premium.

          Personally I think a two tiered system works as the costs of healthcare will always be out of reach of a large proportion of the population especially in America where things like medical litigation and the insane amounts being awarded have made it even worse. NZ has reined in these costs with a “no fault” system of reparations for accidental damage.

      How about the Irish slaves in early colonial America. The estimates are over one million in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Yes, in theory they weren’t slaves – only on a seven contract – but what the history books don’t say is that the planation owner charged them for room and board, so the only way out was fleeing west, which is how several states were populated originally.

      BTW, in 17th century Virginia black and whites slaves labored together on the tobacco plantations under the same strict regime….
