Another ominous parallel with 1860/61 – the Southerners dominated the federal government in every department including the then Department of Defense, which was the Department of War in those days. Washington, D.C. at that time was a southern city carved out of Virginia. The average citizen of the District of Columbia was a Southerner. When Lincoln arrived in D.C. in March of 1861, the only part of the city controlled by the federal government was the area around Capitol Hill and the White Hose, thanks to thousands of Union soldiers with fixed bayonets.
Sound familiar? Just delete “Southerners” for “Leftists” Problems with the judiciary? Lincoln at one point got so pissed at the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court – a hardcore Southern patriot – that in 1862 he ordered his arrest by the U.S. Marshal Service for treason and was ready to have him shot by his troops that very night! Fortunately cooler heads decided to delay the things for 24 hours and Lincoln calmed down and reversed himself.
Want to hear more ominous parallels of civil war then and now? Lincoln was a Republican. The opposition Confederates were Democrats. Jefferson Davis was a Democrat. Robert E. Lee was a Democrat. The list goes on and on. Those Democrats in the North who did not join the Confederates were called “Copperheads” after the deadly snake. In 1864 the Democrat who ran against Lincoln would have ended the first civil war and allowed the South to win. 1864! Only a few months before the Confederates surrendered! This is your “good” Democrats for you – traitors then and traitors now.
Of course, no one believes us prophets of civil war soon to come, but like the man said who lived in the former Yugoslavia: “We didn’t believe civil war was possible until the day it started.”
