    I’ll continue the double-team concept with Scott Ludlam and Larissa Waters.
    These two Australian Greens Senators quit Canberra within days, if not hours, of each other, and for the same reason. They had not relinquished citizenship in the countries of their birth – New Zealand for Ludlam, Canada for Waters.
    Both are giving out with the ‘I had no idea!’ routine. Hard to believe. Is that question in really really tiny print down on the last page of the paperwork you no doubt have to plough through to reach the highest place of government in Australia?
    Ludlam especially has no excuse. A petition was circulating three years ago that questioned him on his citizenship. After nearly ten years in the Senate he’s taken quite a chunk of change off the taxpayer – but of course his assets are virtually nil.
    I guess he spent all the money getting the koala suit dry cleaned!

      Can’t name the council because its a bit personal but no doubt they are all much the same.

      An aquaintance of my brother runs a demolition business and tendered to remove an old jetty. His quote was so low compared to the others he was overlooked as incapable. When he followed it up and made a wee fuss he was reinstated but had to increase his tender by a very large % (still a fraction of the others and the supervising engineer’s estimate). A progress check in a week revealed the job virtually complete and the useful timbers already sold for salvage. He embarrassed the engineer and council, neither of whom knew anything useful about what was required but came to see that the initial tender was enough yet they had insisted he put it up by a large margin. Something else that annoyed the council was that the contract did not actually require the salvage timber be handed over to the council to sell – they just expected that to happen.

      The engineer didn’t believe that they cut the piles off at sea bed level with a chainsaw because everyone knows petrol motors don’t work underwater. And so it goes on.

        Yup,that’s the way it is at work.If we are bidding a municipal job,we take our standard mark up and multiply by 3 and usually we are still the low bidder by far.

        One moronic episode my own local city council pulled was the installation of some street lights they bought.48 double masted Aluminum poles and bases for the main divided thoroughfare through town.They ordered the lights and hired a contractor before they bothered to check what DOT required.The idiots bought 440v lights which are verboten for use on a public roadway and only 110v was allowed.It ended up the local utility company had to step in and get the correct lights installed.

However, the Carinda Police Station is like the Taj Mahal, being far bigger than it should be, for the use of a single officer. The reason? Well, the Department of Public Works got Carinda mixed up with a far larger town called Quirindi, which is located in the New England region of NSW, about 400 kilometres east of Carinda, and they built the police station in the wrong town. How’s that for incompetence? It’s not like you send a crate there and open it up and you’ve got a police station. You need building approvals, plans, site inspections, and all kinds of other items to be ticked off, but nobody in the department actually looked and thought, “Why are we building this huge thing in a tiny little backwater town, miles from anywhere?”
