LOS ANGELES — Lively bidding was seen on the phone, online and in the sale room on August 27, as Bonhams sold the gun Pat Garrett used to kill Billy the Kid for $6,030,313, a world auction record for any firearm. It was estimated at $2-3 million. The firearm was the top lot in the single-owner sale, “The Early West: The Collection of Jim and Theresa Earle,” which achieved a total of $12,387,124, selling 92 percent by lot and 99 percent by value.
The gun, a Colt single-action revolver owned by Sheriff Pat Garrett was used to kill Billy the Kid on July 14, 1881, at Pete Maxwell’s Ranch. It stands as a relic of one of the most important and well-known stories of the Wild West. Now part of the American mythology, Garrett’s friendship with the Kid, their mutual respect, and his subsequent hunt, capture, escape and death have become the stuff of legend.

NSW Premier Gladys B. has announced that when vaccine status hits 70% there will be an easing of restrictions but that only vaccinated people will be allowed to participate. What restrictions will be announced later! Everybody will have to download their vaccine status into their personal QR code on their phones, and have to be scanned at the entrances to all business, workplaces and venues. This will be monitored at a State and Federal level.

I had an appointment with my doctor on Wednesday, just a general checkup he wanted prior to the renewal of BP meds. I asked him (yes I am assuming his gender) what the Ministry of Health was recommending for treatment for those who contracted COVID seeing as how they must be doing something given that only one person had died in the recent Delta variant out break. He said there is no treating the infected just as there isn’t any for the regular influenza. That’s right, you are quarantined somewhere and either you get better or go into hospital where you are given oxygen as the only treatment.
That seems to be the model – isolation until your oxygen saturation drops and you have difficulty in breathing. Once you get desaturated then we’ll admit you for oxygen supplementation until such time as you go into respiratory failure and then we’ll admit you to an intensive care unit where we’ll ventilate you in the prone position, we’ll treat you with corticosteroids and any other necessary symptomatic treatment or targeted organ support as you do the usual ICU patient journey > respiratory infection/urinary infection/contaminated IV lines > septicaemia > multiple organ failure. Some recover, the fat ones don’t often. It seems evident that various treatments like ivermectin, HCQ and/or monoclonal antibodies can prevent deterioration if given early by somewhere between about 60 – 85%. Is this better than the touted protection given by inoculation with an mRNA substance? The trick they are really missing is that ivermectin reduces the period of transmissibility significantly! This has been part of the success of handing out treatment packs to the general population in some states in India, Mexico and Peru.
Who am I to know after all it’s almost 40 years since I ran the ICU in a large major teaching hospital and over 25 years since I gave up looking after private patients in private hospital ICU’s – and things have moved on since then.
