Talking about Australia. The news cycle in Queensland has been about Cyclone Alfred which was due to hit the coast just after midday today. The whole city of Brisbane has been shut down for 2 days and the news and Bureau of Meteorology have been predicting a disaster with massive winds and rain, and the cyclone making landfall at or near Brisbane. It did so just north of the Brisbane airport. The wind speeds at that time measured a paltry 10 knots at the airport.

I’ve got a bunch of old antique car carburetor parts from the 30’s and 40’s. They fetch pretty good money online of you can identify what carburetor or car they fit. So if I get one I’m not sure of, I snap a couple hi-resolution pics from a couple different angles and then drop the pics into Grok’s search bar. It usually has an answer in less than a minute, usually is right and a couple times even found the correct parts manual for the model the part came off of.
So my boss, his grandfather worked for Tiffany in NY as a Bronze sculptor back in the teens. He inherited a bunch of his tools most of which he knew the history of, except for one very ornate gas hand held torch. We were wondering if it was a factory produced item, or if his grandfather had made it. So I did the same with the torch, I just cleaned off a small area on the workbench and snapped a few pictures and fed them to Grok and asked it to identify the type of torch and provide similar examples if any existed.
It took about a minute and came back saying it could find no other similar examples, however judging by the hacksaw blade, 23 #8 x 1-1/4 Brass screws and the two 1/4″ NPT globe valves in the picture with the torch, it suggests it is being used in an industrial setting, perhaps a machine shop or possibly an automotive radiator repair.
I was floored that it correctly identified the other objects in the picture and accurately described and counted them them as well
I wish such AI was available (and I knew of it) when I was living in my 120 year old house in L.A. There were a number of items I’d love to have tried to identify. Thanks for the tip.
