Weird flies

We have a species of fly here which can hold a perfect hover, even in gusty conditions.
But the truly strange thing about this fly is that it moves only by 90 degree turns..a series of angular manouevres which always terminate in that same perfect hover. They behave like chopper pilots suffering from OCD.
What the hell programmed them that way, and why?
