Unintended consequences

Rooftop solar panels overloading electricity grid
THE runaway take-up of rooftop solar panels is undermining the quality of electricity supplies, feeding so much power back into the network that it is stressing the system and causing voltage rises that could damage household devices such as computers and televisions.
Power distribution lines and home wiring were designed for electricity to flow from power stations to appliances, but households with solar panels do the reverse of this.
One of Australia’s biggest electricity network providers, Ausgrid, yesterday warned that there was a “significant likelihood” that costs would have to rise because of the impact of the solar photovoltaic cells…’        The Australian

Yep, and it wouldn’t have happened if taxpayer money hadn’t been stolen to make it affordable.

Is there a single green initiative anywhere that has worked as advertised and paid for itself?

  3. Kris K says:

Just another green initiative which either kills off real jobs and/or increases our cost of living.

Edit: Keith’s comment wasn’t there when I wrote the above – great minds

Keep an eye out for some cheap secondhand photovoltaic panels…..2 x 120 watts would be very handy to keep the boats batteries charged.

I’ve been hoping that the billions invested in the ‘renewable’ energy sector will provide the breakthrough needed for more efficient and smaller panels. I just don’t have the space for the current size required.

One of those little wind-powered rechargers would work well, Mawm–they just clamp on the the cockpit rail.

I hesitate here. If the power company is doing all the bitching then it has something to do with them not making as much money. My power bill looks like a ransom demand from a kidnap gang. If I didn’t use a single kilowatt of power my fixed charges would still come in at just under $200/month. I had to pay the capital cost for a transformer and all the underground cabling and they bloodywell own it!! They have to be compelled to take power from alternative generation but will pay you sweet f. a. for it. The difference is supposed to cover their overheads and make a profit. Instead all I hear here is them crying about the logistic difficulties of being a power company.

Frankly I’ve had enough of the thieving bastards. If I could get my property off the grid entirely, I would. And I’m no hippy alterative.

The Bloody Record of the War Against Carbon—and the Green Movement Generally

In Uganda in the last few years, according to The New York Times, over 20,000 people have been pushed off their land to clear the way for the British New Forests Company to plant trees to gain carbon credits.

The effective banning of DDT has cost nearly 50 million otherwise preventable deaths.

Developed countries now promote biofuels as an alternative to fossil fuels The policy of just one of those nations—the United States—has caused an estimated 192,000 excess deaths in developing countries every year since 2004 because diverting crops to fuels forces food prices up. In the past eight years, that amounts to about 1.5 million deaths.

    Etc
