Kiwi priorities:

‘Christchurch rebuild plan revealed
A covered sports stadium is the showpiece inclusion in the rebuild blueprint
…and Ngai Tahu cultural centre…’
And the taxpayer will be footing the bill, whatever the government claims. Hell, the ‘quake has caused enormous damage to the NZ economy, damage which will take years to repair and they’re building a bloody stadium and a “cultural centre” for maori?

I particularly liked the Hi-Viz-Jacket-Wearing muppet interviewed on the news tonight who claimed the town planners have created a “canvas” and the free market would be able to create the city, where if a building owner wanted something “different” or “quirky” he would be able to build it.

And in the next breath went on to say the new buildings would have to conform to 7 design criteria!

Nice to see priorities at play. More government, artist and sporty types to suck the lifeblood of the VoD. Not a real income generating business in sight!

  3. Angus says:

Now that Tim Barnett is back in town, they might think about funding an expansion of the Green Room Sauna & Bath house ;-)

  4. Cadwallader says:

All the above criticisms are valid but what makes it all worse is that these idiots expect private enterprise to re-build on a liquefaction-ridden site. These “designers” are not simply stupid they are dangerously stupid!

  5. WAKE UP says:

The people talking about re/building Christchurch are in both fantasy-land and deep denial.

I think that the way foward is to include Mouldy in the Planning??

  7. Flashman says:

These hi-viz shiny arsed soppy clowns are delusional. Any private equity investor who put their own money into CBD Christchurch property development would be certifiably mad.

That said, it’s always interesting to see NZ bureaucrats’ priorities exposed: a bloody sports stadium [an over-budget white elephant that will never earn a dime all of its troubled liquifacted existence], a cultural minority cuzzy-got-the-contract rort, and a “showcase” arts centre [another Other People’s Money] bleeding sphincter.

    Flash,

Do you know something about geotechnical engineering that the rest of us here “in country” don’t?

    • Flashman says:

Who is “us”, sport? You and your corgis?

      • Ciaron says:

        “us” in the engineering profession.

        smartarse.

        • rufus says:

someone’s got egg on his face. Nice one flash.

an over-budget white elephant that will never earn a dime all of its troubled liquifacted existence

I don’t know what is worse in this sentance, over stating the fucking obvious, or the total ignorance.

The “rebuilders” of Christchurch are in both fantasy-land and deep denial.

  9. I’m thinking of joinng the Consrvatives and telling them all they need to do to win ChCh is declare the “Red Zone” a “Free Trade Zone”, with absolutely no regulations, taxes, rates, “design criteria”, development “contributions”, minimum wages, RMA restrictions, etc, et bloody cetera at all…

    • Ciaron says:

Not bad, how will you tackle the issue of insurance?

      • WAKE UP says:

It’d be nice to see the bloody INSURANCE COMPANIES tackle the issue of insurance, let alone anyone else!

      • Do you mean payout on policies pre-dating the Earthquakes?

        • Ciaron says:

That is an ongoing problem, yes, but I meant specifically that without stringent design conditons primarily WRT foundations (among other things) you won’t get any insurance for your new build.

Wake Up expresses the feeling nicely… I don’t have to deal with insurance companies on a personal level, but professionally one can see they are doing all they can to minimise their exposure, and I think it would be naive to expect them to do otherwise.

          • Insurance companies could outline the geo-technical and engineering reports they required before insuing a policy.

Or the property owners within the “Free Trade Zone” could form a co-op and look for an offshore re-insurer.

… Off the top of my head…

            • Ciaron says:

Offshore entity would probably require similar evidence of best practice design and construction… Given the new seismicity risks.

              • So owners could form a co-op, take meetings with re-insurers, ascertain what they require and if they do not currently have those reports (and they would have to get at least extensive geotech for consenting, so its a cost they have to bear either way) bear those costs.

It’s a pain but insurance in my experience is always a pain and never covers everything you want it to cover.
