Foreshore and seabed: Was John Key lying?

This item, just posted in Stuff News:
‘The PM hopes the Maori Party won’t withdraw foreshore and seabed legislation support after a proposed change making it clear beach access will be free.’

But..but didn’t the PM assure all Kiwis that this legislation would not affect their access to beaches? So why does he now “hope” the Maori Party won’t withdraw their support since he has been forced to include free access in the legislation? Was he lying in the first place–or simply incompetent?

Bureaucrats–not just harmless idiots:

‘Victims of the 7/7 bombings died in ‘agony’ because restrictive rules prevented rescuers from reaching them sooner, an inquest heard today.
A survivor of the attacks criticised emergency service ‘protocols’ on entering dangerous situations that left some people to suffer excruciating pain for up to 40 minutes before they died.’

A distant rumble…

‘When the American people have been pushed to the end of our good nature, it is best to clear the field.  We’ve been here before throughout our history.  Once we set our mind to changing a set of circumstances, and we commit resources to it, circumstances change.
Most Americans have an irreverent streak in them that measures about a mile wide.  We respect your differences, live & let live, do your own thing…but please don’t rub it in our faces or try to force us to abide by your rules.  We’ll be patient…until we aren’t patient any longer.
Then, it’s on.’
Memento Mori

When F1 drivers weren’t just “products”:

‘James Hunt was not known for behaving appropriately. But never was he more outrageous than in the last two weeks of October 1976, when he was in Tokyo battling Niki Lauda for the title of Formula One world motor racing champion.
His preparations were unconventional, to say the least. He had spent the two weeks leading up to the race on a round-the-clock alcohol, cannabis and cocaine binge with his friend Barry Sheene, who was world motorcycle champion that year.
While Jackie Stewart famously abstained from sex a week before a motor race, Hunt would often have sex minutes before climbing into the cockpit. ‘   and there’s much more

‘Rangers trap 4m saltwater crocodile’

‘RESIDENTS are relieved a ”cheeky” crocodile that was stalking campers in Cape York has been caught.
Rangers trapped a 4.1m saltwater crocodile at the Normanby River near Kalpowar Station, north of Laura, on Cape York Peninsula, on Friday…’

hmm…we’re headed up that way in a few days….my experience is that as fast as one croc is trapped, another moves into the vacated territory. Still, it gives the rangers the illusion that they’re doing something useful, I guess.

muddled, juvenile thinking:

‘Thats not Capitalism numpty…thats an attempt to evade reality and the objective law of cause and effect. Capitalism punishes those who try that by having them go under…its a profit AND loss system. Those mine owners, if really guilty of dodgy practice and acting cheap will suffer for that in the market…which is the people who will not deal with them or work for them. And if they acted criminally then the State will, and should, prosecute them.’

Commenter James. An Objectivist.
“Capitalism punishes those who try that by having them go under…its a profit AND loss system.”
Which conveniently ignores the fact that governments use taxpayer’s money to prop up big business. Ever heard of corporate welfare?
“which is the people who will not deal with them or work for them”
Which is pure bullshit–the world buys goods made by the most oppressive regime on earth–China– and sheer hunger removes any choice people may notionally have about whether to work for them. What fuckwit James is suggesting is that people who live hand-to-mouth, who are under the heel of oppression somehow, magically have “choices”.
‘And if they acted criminally then the State will, and should, prosecute them.’
Bullshit, again. The world is replete with examples of business owners who escape prosecution for unsafe and exploitative behaviour. And again, people will work for them because the imperatives of survival give them no choice.

This moronic Utopian vision is in essence no different to the behaviour of those who support Communism.
