Wabbit rang the Toyota dealer in Charters Towers for a quote on a job, expected to cost around $1200. The woman who answered the ‘phone sounded clueless, but I’m used to useless front-desk staff and let it go. She said she’d get the price and ring me back. 40 minutes later…nothing. So I rang them. A widdle girl (she sounded about twelve years old and pretty thick) put me on hold, with advertisements blasting in my ear at very high volume. Widdle girl#2 came online and when I pointed out I’d been waiting forty minutes, said “sorry about that, but we only have two girls working today, I’m getting you a quote”.
This isn’t an isolated case, not by a long bloody shot. All the vast numbers of women in the workforce who are fronting companies doing technical work have achieved is to add a layer of incompetence, ignorance and expense to the businesses. I’ve known exceptions, but very, very few.
(I then rang a clutch specialist in Townsville and the ‘phone was answered by the bloke who runs the business. Five minutes later I had a firm price, an estimate of the time needed–and a way to get the car into the workshop by 7am on the due date.)
