Local councils can kill you, with impunity

but they’ll take you to court for building an “unauthorised” tree hut…
‘Paperwork blamed for delay in demolishing killer building
‘An engineer lashed out at city council processes for being “too time consuming” at the Royal Commission of Inquiry today, after paperwork delayed the demolition of a red-stickered building which later collapsed in the February quake – killing four people…’

Bureaucracy will trump common sense every time.

it is indeed a tragic outcome. But never fear, the clipboarders will save the day, and lighten your net worth of that cumbersome million bucks. Expect every building built before 2000 to be rerated with EQ geotech and then be ordered to be brought up to 80% of current code.
It will probably be cheaper to bulldoze the thing and build a new one. But you’d no doubt need a resource consent for that because they changed the rules since the building you bought was built, and now needs a consent to have the site’s function continued in light of the zoning rehash. (Believe it or not this is actually happening to a house on our street. It has a commercial component where the guy who owns the place sold furniture, the council are now trying to go the guy for a resource consent because his furniture was hard furnishings instead of soft furnishings! So he moved out and replaced himself with some Architect type people, and lo and behold, he needs a resource to allow that to happen! Poor bastard, literally now that the scumball parasites have found a revenue stream to milk)

Had the decision been made by a private owner or contractor and this happen there would be cries to crucify them, yet oddly enough when it’s government ordained planners there’s no such outrage.I guess since it was the civil government at fault the families of the victims are out of luck too huh?

This idea of preserving the past at all costs has got to stop.I’m all for preserving history, but not when risking lives and pissing away money needlessly is the price.I’m assuming there are pictures of these old structures on file?So why not just demo the damn things and construct an original facade on a new code building? We’ve got people here that can work wonders with styro, fiberglass and blown stucco——–Nah,never mind,no way that would work

A solution used by American property developers is to bring in a demolition gang overnight and level the building.

When the council clipboard drones make a fuss, they reply: “Oh shit! How the hell did that happen?”

Many of NZ’s so-called “heritage buildings” [aka jerry-built Edwardians riddled with borer] are worthy of a 50 minute midnight tete-a-tete with Mr Komatsu.
