For whatever reason I always celebrate on Memorial day and Memorialize on Independence day.My ancestors fought on both sides particularly my great great grandfathers,they both fought at the Battle of Shiloh in 1862 a two day battle that cost 26,000 men.Neither of them were wounded or killed which leaves me with awe that I even exist.
There was an eyewitness account written of the battle that described one part of it being fought in a Cherry orchard.2,000 men engaged in a rifle attack that descended into a bayonet charge at close quarters,only 12 men survived wounded.The account has the battle taking place under a constant snow of Cherry blossoms that later covered the bodies of the fallen in what had to be a surreal scene.It’s a shame that civilized men should descend into war,but war as Sherman said is a fever that must run it’s course.
