The man is a contractor working on The Crossing at Highbrook Business Park in East Tamaki and a passer-by spotted him in the act, took a photograph and sent it to the Herald…’
The passer-by needs to get an effing life.These people would have loved living in East Germany, where every second person was a Stasi informer. This is the kind of repressive, nannying, ratbastard, feminised society Kiwis have fled in droves.

    But if the tank had blown up what would your reaction to that picture had been? Shut down the blow torch first. A bit of safety can save lives.

      Crap.
      I’ve worked on construction sites and boatbuilding sites and in other very hazardous environments and seen very, very few accidents.
      Believe it or not, the guys using this gear are the best judges of what’s safe or not and what’s a reasonable trade-off between safety and productivity.
      My reaction to the tank blowing up? shit happens. And no amount of health and safety bullshit, no matter how many bureaucratic parasites who’ve seldom done a real day’s work in their lives, will stop that.
      The point of the post, in case you missed it, is the mindset of the kind of busybody who would stop and take a photograph of something that’s none of their business and most likely something they know fuck-all about.

        In this day of litigation an ounce of precaution is worth a million of dollars.

        I realize that professionals know best, but lawyers rake up the dollars.

        Too bad it isn’t the old days when construction guys (yes men not shemales) whistled at a pretty girl without being slapped with a harassment suit. Hell as a young woman I used to get whistled at all the time. I was flattered. I wish for those times (and that body).

        1) Go look at your average gas barbeque and see exactly how far the bottle is from the burners. It’s about the same distance as from that torch.

        2) Any school kid with a bunsen burner knows that you could wave your hand through that yellow flame with no problem at all.

          Just think about this:

          It is impossible to find a Jerry Can in the US. Some idiots would pour gas onto a fire, the fire would climb into the can, the can explodes, the idiot gets burnt. Guess who the lawyers sued out of business.

    The difference is, I see that “ounce of precaution” as abject surrender to tyranny. And I will not do it.
    What’s more, I’ll continue to abuse and ridicule the cowards like that busybody with a camera who act as the enablers of tyrants.

    Nothing at all wrong with that.First off it’s a weed burner and not a blow torch.Second you cannot have detonation in any Propane container at any pressure greater than atmosphere with a Stochiometric ratio of less than 6.45% fuel to air.With the tank having nearly 100% of it’s volume filled with Propane there simply isn’t any air pressent to support combustion let alone detonation.Also those weed burners are a PITA to lite up,so leaving a pilot flame lit is the best practice.

    Maybe,we should insist on better science and math training in school,then people would see things like this,understand what they are seeing and leave the man alone to do his work.Hell we used to use the pilot flame to thaw out the regulator and hose on the rig when it iced up :mrgreen:
