‘Three prominent Auckland businessmen have avoided conviction and been granted permanent name suppression after attacking a neighbour.
The men appeared in Auckland District Court this afternoon after each earlier admitting a charge of common assault.
The offence carries a maximum penalty of a year in jail but the men walked away without penalty, aside from each having to pay the victim $1500..’
“Blind justice”, eh? This is neither blind nor justice.
As we found out 7 years ago, NZ has the best justice system that money can buy!
As is well known, The Ruling Class is above the law!
Understand, peons?
As there was no summary of facts we don’t know whether the complainant got what he deserved. Given that, I’m sitting on the fence while not disputing the general tone of the post.
The fact is that the wealthy, celebrities and sports “stars” are too often given light sentences and name suppression, Brown.
The fuzzy logic is this. If Joe Meathead with a rap-sheet a mile long gets his name in the paper for assault it’s just another day for him.
But if Johnny Bigshot gets his name in the paper for assault then the punishment is theoretically greater than it would be for Joe Meathead, so Johnny gets his suppression order.
Of course, it’s all bullshit. If Johnny Bigshot wanted to keep his name clean then he should have avoided being convicted of an offence in the first place. But keep in mind, the judge is playing to the system he knows will protect him in exactly the same manner if he gets caught with his dick in a small boy.
