The Kiwi inferiority complex in full flight:

‘Oz ain’t got nothing on ol’ Godzone’
Relax, Kiwis–we may have some venomous beasties, but they don’t break into your camper van, rape you missus and rob you. Minimal commonsense precautions will keep you safe, petals.

Inferiority complex is right. I confess I used to think similarly, until I moved to Aus. The fact is, the indigenous species of both countries are pretty fatal. And the indigenous Australian killers are a lot easier to avoid.

 I couldn’t resist the retort, Gantt. The clown who wrote the article would of course claim that it’s tongue-in-cheek…
We’re sitting outside under the palm tree, enjoying a cold beer and it’s 9:30pm. No bugs, no snakes or crocs or surly natives cruising past giving us the hairy eyeball.
And we went for a 300km drive to Charters Towers and a few other places today and didn’t see a single lethal animal–not even driving cars. I know where I feel safer and more comfortable.

      • The Gantt Guy says:

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not for a second suggesting we’re not, ya know, better. It’s just the giant chip on the shoulder gets so damn heavy to Cary around all the time!

  2. KG says:

Somebody like Oswald Bastable could come over for a holiday and in the process punch a stroppy croc’s lights out, strangle a snake that had the nerve to cross his path and kill a buffalo for lunch.
Plenty of Kiwis find Oz a perfectly comfortable place to be, yet the myths about that savage great continent to the West persist.

    • oswald bastable says:

Actually. wandering around Melbourne at night, I saw nothing to be concerned about (apart from trams in the middle of the road ;-) )

I could not say the same for any city or town in NZ…

As someone who has been to neither Oz nor NZ, {but as an American who has been all over our country}, while I’d like to visit NZ, and see the stunning countryside, were I given a choice where to LIVE, it’d be Oz, hands-down – b’lieve I’d get to feeling a bit …………………………………. claustrophobic ………………………………. in NZ, with only 103,483 sq mi ………………………………….. Oz’s 2,941,299 sq mi, plus their population density {7.3/sq mi} is SO much more appealing …………………………….. y’all just have to adopt the 2nd Amendment, though ……………………………………..

Ya,lacking the right to keep and bear arms does knock them down to third world status doesn’t it?

  4. Flashman says:

In the last couple of years the talent drain from NZ to Australia has become more noticeable at an everyday level in these islands. There’s definitely a lack of skilled artisans, managers and bright-spark young entrepreneurs. The good ones stand out more as a consequence against a grey background of rising general mediocrity, jobsworths and silly-ideas-for-a-new-home-business chancers.

The NZ inferiority complex is more than a qualitative notion – I fear it is now statistically relevant. For example, you will notice the mainstream NZ media running more and more crime, sport and human interest stories because these are the gruesome bones emerging through what remains of the retreating national tissue.

“..because these are the gruesome bones emerging through what remains of the retreating national tissue.”
Nice line, and, I suspect, a profound truth.

Had to have a laugh at the comments on food. At least you aussies can afford your prawns, the last time i had a Kaikoura cray was 1999 at kaikoura….it cost $75. As for Paua its all taken illegally by the natives to sell to the chinese restaurants. Oh and as to the weather, well summer has been cancelled this year. Just returned from Gold Coast where weather was just great……

    • KG says:

Aussie crays (from the tropics, at least) are nowhere near as good as the Kiwi ones. Tasmanian crays are another story, though. Prawns at our local supermarket are around $14 a kilo, wild pork is virtually free and premium beef is between $9 and $13 a kilo. And Mainland cheese is $8 a kilo.
Summer is hot as hell, sure, but people still manage to work all day outside in it without melting–it’s just a matter of getting used to it. Half the bloody world lives in hot climates, after all.

Hey, at least the public transport here is top-notch http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/6231330/Woman-stabbed-in-neck-at-bus-stop

  7. KG says:

    Charming….

  8. starboard says:

“The 37-year-old was stabbed at a bus stop in Wallace Rd in Papatoetoe”

..says it all really. Dollars down its a poo skin.
