Utterly off-thread: I am going to Darwin for a week of warmth in June. My wife says it is not worth going there unless one visits Kakadu. Is she (as usual) correct? We have previously been to Alice, King’s Canyon and Ayers Rock so this time we’re up north a bit more. Has anyone got ideas for a visit in that region?
“Is she (as usual) correct? ”
Nooo! We lived there for a while, and it’s known by the locals as “Kakadon’t”. And for good reason. It’s over-regulated to hell. (I had a pet hawk we called Orville there, who used to follow me to the supermarket. A ranger read me the riot act because I was tossing him ‘roo meat which he liked to catch in mid-air…needless to say she was invited to explore the sex and travel option) A lot of the areas are closed off unless you’re part of a tour group (ugh!) and really, the only effective way to see the place if you’re on a timetable is by helicopter.
Lichfield National Park is much nicer.
But I wouldn’t bother with either–go to the Tiwi islands instead, just a short hop from Darwin and a memorable place to visit.
And the Mindil Beach markets on Thursday or Friday evening are just magic.
Thanks. I get the over-regulated perception. I hope your hawk survived the bureaucracy.
Anyway, the dry season isn’t the best time to visit the Territory. It’s much more dramatic in the Wet.They find crocs on the main street and the thunderstorms are epic!
Spiffy new website indeed!
What a great rising sun photo
I love the sense of space.
