Spaceflight has a price

And sometimes that price is very high.Virgin Galactic’s Spaceship 2 explodes during test flight,Co-Pilot killed,Pilot seriously injured.

The term “serious anomaly” is the understatement of the year.”Catastrophic Failure” would be more like it.

    “non-trivial malfunction”?

    • Darin says:

That’s one of the risks flying solid rocket motors, they occasionally go boom!

The descriptions sound like somebody from the WH is writing them

I was sad to hear about this.

The one small bit of consolation is that (in spite of one person being killed and one seriously injured) it would have been much worse if the craft had been carrying tourists.

  3. Oswald bastable says:

Interesting that one survived. Generally, after this sort of event, anyone on board comes out like cat food.

    • Darin says:

Was reading another report that said the pilot was able to eject, but the co-pilot didn’t and was found in the cockpit wreckage.

I figure the explosion probably either killed outright,or incapacitated the co-pilot assuming his rail wasn’t damaged and he rode it down.Hope the poor bastard was dead before the trip to the ground.

    • Michael in Nelson says:

From what I heard, Oswald, he may have survived but at the moment he still looks like cat food. Would be a shame if this stopped private space travel.

  4. Ronbo says:

It’s like they say, “There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots.”

Taps for a bold pilot.

I’m currently re-reading”Kelly”-More than my fair share by Lockheed’s Kelly Johnson. In it at the end of chapter 6 he tells of meeting Charles and Anne Lindberg many years after Charles’s famous flight, at a dinner banquet in Hollywood.Anne was by chance his dining partner and they of course stuck up a conversation about their experiences in and future of aviation.

When the discussion turned to what values they thought were really important in life the list they came up with was the following-

#1 Belief in God,when you’re in a difficult situation, ill or in danger and wonder if you’re going to make it through to the next morning, you’re faith is one of the most important thoughts that will sustain you.

#2 Health, without it one cannot truly be happy.

#3 Purpose,we must all have a purpose in life, doing something we want to do and doing it well This will provide the necessities, security, money and rewards of other sorts.

#4 A wife or husband that loves and understands you

#5 Respect for the people for whom you work and for the people who work for you.

All in all a great philosophy to live by IMHO.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gif
